BASIC TECHNIQUES OF THROWING | Roberto Reali
27-28-29-30 June and 01-02-03 July 2022
Intensive course on throwing.
Working on wheel is an art that requires time, perseverance and a small group. This basic course, thanks to the experience of Roberto Reali (wheel potter in Faenza for over 50 years), will deal with the main techniques for starting to work on the wheel such as: centring, the cylinder and then the first forms derived from the cylinder such as the bowl, the vase, the cup and the jug.
We have deliberately not specified a programme divided into days because the course is structured as a marathon linked to the repetition of gestures and techniques essential for entering the world of throwing.
On the penultimate day of the course participants will be given the opportunity to fire a
selection of their own works.
Course times:
Daily | 9.00 – 12.00 and 14.00 – 17.00 (6 hours per day);
The course starts at 9 a.m. on Monday 27/06 and ends at 5 p.m. on Sunday 03/07.

CREATIVE MOLDING TECHNIQUE | Simon Zsolt József
09-10-11-12 September 2022
The aim of the course is to understand the opportunities to model the forms inherent in molding errors. We will learn how to prepare a multi-part plaster molding form, which allows us to model the internal and external shapes of the final object.
The artist will make a presentation of his works, which will allow to observe and understand this special molding procedure. The second half of the screening will demonstrate the creation of a specific object from the beginning to the final stage.
Participants will start working on one of Zsolt's floral objects, through an individual consultation, and later, they will create a different shape, allowing learning from each other's work. From the preparation of the plaster, the finishing, sawing, sanding and assembly of the plaster form will follow until the porcelain casting.
It will be possible to choose between two different techniques: - FLORAL (the organisation will provide 2 plaster cylinders with a diameter of 19 cm); - VASE TYPE (the organisation will provide two plaster cylinders with a diameter of 19 cm and two with a diameter of 12 cm). The technique chosen must be communicated to the Faenza Art Ceramic Center at the time of the registration.
Simon Zsolt József Simon Zsolt József studied at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest. He is an all-round artist, interested in ceramics, painting, theater and music. The study of movement is the basis of his work. His particular research is concentrated in the process through the molds or modules that give birth to a particular shape, not the programmed one. It uses porcelain for its quality of fragility which grants a sense of lightness, movement and refinement.

PORCELAIN WAVES | Mette Maya
22-23-24-25 September 2022
The workshop explores the use of organic shaped structures in ceramics inspired by nature and architecture. During the workshop delicate structures will be made using bamboo curtains and string.
Afterwards several layers of soft paperclay will then be applied on the bamboo structure to create textured porcelain waves. The bamboo will burn during firing, making possible many creative possibilities through the addition, combination and modification of shapes. These bamboo structures will also be the basis for making plaster moulds to explore movement in clay.
Finally, a selection of the works produced will be glazed with engobes and oxides that will allow for very interesting colour effects in the final firing.
Mette Maya Mette Maya Gregersen holds a BA in ceramics from the Camberwell College of Arts ad a MA in Art Psychotherapy from Sheffield University. She has travelled extensively and has been invited to ceramic residencies in the UK, Hungary and China. Her work is an investigation into her own emotional condition as well as into social identity and a connection between thought, hands and space. She has exhibited internationally, hold lectures and taught many workshops. She is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics, the Danish Association of Art and Design and the Dirty Go Clay Band.

LARGE-SCALE SCULPTURE | Martin McWilliam
20-21-22-23 October 2022
This course offers the opportunity to build large-scale vases or sculptures. These could be figurative, abstract or very classic. A large and complete scale of construction techniques will be made available. Participants will learn how to handle large clay slabs, coils, work starting from the solid block and combining all these procedures. The possibilities of finishing will be explored: different media of scraping, filing, beating, brushing, polishing, application of slips or engobes. We will discuss ways to add color with slips, oxides and various firing possibilities and the use of cold glaze. We will start from the demonstration and illustration of large-scale constructions. And later, the participants will be asked to bring a model or a sketch of an individual project and the teacher will evaluate and assist during the construction process. The strong point of this course lies in conveying an open use of clay.
Martin McWilliam Sculptor of great international recognition, with pieces awarded in museums and galleries around the world. He uses traditional methods and firings to create sculptures of great impact, not only for their beauty and technical virtuosity. And his very particular way of dealing with the construction of an object, the vase, breaking down the shape and also working with space, creating a sort of "Trompe-l'œil" of the inverted vase. For 40 years, creativity in ceramics has been part of Martin's daily life. He likes the challenges he is exposed to in workshops around the world, as solutions are sought to realize the ideas of the participants.
