Realisation of Artworks

Service for Artists who want to create artworks.

The Faenza Art Ceramic Center is familiar with the many complexities involved in the creation of ceramic works: from large dimensions, to high temperature, glaze, decoration, firing, etc. Nothing is taken for granted or totally predictable and each process requires great experience and knowledge of materials. If you are an artist and need to create works of art that due to technique, knowledge of materials, space or availability of tools you are unable to complete, the Faenza Art Ceramic Center can do it for you.

How we work:
    • Sending of the project by the artist and phone call to determine the work;
    • Selection by the FACC of the most suitable technician(s) to carry out the project;
    • Meeting between the FACC technician(s) and the artist. If a physical meeting is not possible, video call; During the meeting the technician(s) will present to the artist the various aspects of the realisation of the work (materials - taking into account the artist's needs and the use that will be made of the work, time - taking into account all the phases of the realisation of a work, possible alternative solutions if the artist's initial idea is considered unfeasible);
    • Agreement on the project between the technician(s) and the Artist;
    • Faenza Art Ceramic Center sends the estimate to the artist;
    • If the artist accepts the estimate, the project will begin;
    • Free sampling of materials (clays and glazes) as per the final work by the FACC; Before proceeding with the realisation of the work, the technicians will evaluate the samples together with the artist;
    • Payment of a deposit by the artist according to the agreements between FACC and Artist;
    • Realisation of the work by the FACC technician(s);
    • The artist may check the progress of the work cyclically;
    • End of the project;
    • Packaging and Delivery of the work (at the expense of the FACC only if included in the estimate);
    • Installation of the work (at the expense of the FACC only if included in the estimate);
    • Payment of the balance by the artist.

We strongly believe in the work of artists and as FACC we want to provide all the skills and equipment that our international centre can offer to carry out your projects.

Ceramic&Colours Award

III Edition - 2020

“Crystalline glaze, the charm of the crystals”

The Faenza Art Ceramic Center announces the third edition of the “Ceramic&Colours Award”, a ceramic competition with the aim of promoting and enhancing the research in the field of ceramic glazes for the finishing of ceramic objects.

For 2020 edition the “Crystalline glaze” effect has been selected.

Description It is a kind of finishing of ceramic glass surfaces that can be developed both at high and low temperature, whose main characteristic is the formation of macro crystals that can be easily seen with naked eyes. All matt or satin surfaces, that in many cases can turn out because of a devitrification of the glazes during the cooling process, are therefore excluded from the competition. We would like to highlight that because of the technical nature of the competition, the technical committee will mainly take into account the artworks that will better develop the potential of this theme and its complexity: the size of the crystals, chromatism and chemical nature of the crystallization caused by zinc, molybdenum, vanadium, wolfram, titanium, lithium, etc.

Participation The Award is open to everybody, with no restrictions concerning age, gender, nationality or else. Each competitor may present only one work.

Procedures and deadlines for application The participation to the Competition is free. Applications must be submitted to the Faenza Art Ceramic Center NO LATER THAN 30/09/2020 the following documents are necessary: - Application form filled in. - 2 high resolution digital photos by email, having a good quality and an homogeneous background. - A data sheet with the relevant descriptions of the work including (otherwise the application will be considered invalid) the measures, the materials used and info on the firing process. - A short CV of the artist - A document (or a self-certification) where the artists declare that the works belong to them.

LA SINTERRACOTTA | Giovanni Cimatti

30-31 March 2019

The program of the Crystal Glazes of the expert José Maria Mariscal provides the formulations of glazes and frits best suited to the cristals, the theory on crystallizations, temperatures, applications and methods of firing, reduction and post-reduction, treatments with acids and the formulation for red backgrounds.

José Maria Mariscal José Maria Mariscal, borns in the ceramics citty La Bisbal d'Empordà, Spain is the son of a potter. After a long experience as a jiggerman, he opened his potter studio in 2003 and experimented with engobes, raku, copper and crystal glazs and collaborated with artists Peter Ilsey and Manolo Sierra. He has participated in various fairs, masterclasses and symposiums in the United States, Europe, Israel and Australia.

I find the perfection of crystalline glazes with the perfect amount of crystalls between the backround and the surface. My forms are classic and conservative and I have the ability to control the placement of the crystalls in the surface. I can’t stop to research in Crystalline glazes and I Love to experiment this technique in my gaz kiln. Now I am working in reduction in crystalline glazes and the most important: developping crystalls in reduction and my first attempts gives me very exiting results.

PAPER GLAZE, LO SMALTO FELICE | Giovanni Cimatti

15-16 May 2021

When we approach ceramic glazes, the first impression is of immensity ... where do I start? What are the raw materials? Which glazes will fit my pieces? The development of custom glazes is particularly attractive to most potters. In this course, following a simple methodology, working methods will be taught to plan the development of glazes and obtain a large quantity of them. In this way we will expand the development of colouring, textures, applications and aesthetic results applicable to the author's ceramics. A laboratory for testing ceramic glazes for 1240-60 ° C is proposed, both for firing in an electric kiln and in a gas kiln. An extensive documentation will be provided, which will be examined in presentations and theoretical speeches interspersed with the work of the workshop, as well as computerized archiving systems for ceramic recipes.

Maite Larena Graduated in chemistry at the University of Valencia, Spain and self-taught ceramist. Larena's career is divided between artistic and technical work. In addition to her personal and collective exhibitions with the series of special glazed containers; Maite has been invited to several international conferences as a highly experienced researcher in the field of ceramic glazes and stains. PAPERCLAY NEARLY STONEWARE IN COLOUR | Giovanni Cimatti

11-12 May 2024

Paperclay course developed by Giovanni Cimatti

Dry clay, of all types, can find new life in the Paper Clay technique. In this course we will investigate how to use, in Paper version, Faenza; the Italian clay par excellence fired until it reaches its maximum hardness. Experiences will be made on how to make forms: by casting with liquid clay mixture in cardboard moulds or with assemblages of dry clay slabs. The forms will then be finished with engobes and crystallines applied on raw and fired once in the so-called single firing.

CERAMIC MAZE: THE GLAZES | Vilma Bosi

18-19 May 2024

Learn how to work with glazes, easy application, decoration and firing of ceramics.

How much water should be added when preparing the glaze? How should you proceed to make a good application? In this course we want to introduce you to glazing ceramic artefacts by providing some basic specific skills. We will start with the knowledge of the products (Glazes, Transparent glazes, Colours, etc.) and their peculiarities, we will begin with how to proceed in their preparation and we will end with the opportunity to try out the main glazing techniques and a guide to ceramic firing. In particular, we will deal with application by immersion, spraying with an airbrush and brush glazing with the aid of special vehicles that allow for better application. We will present the necessary steps to obtain effects in the coatings also with applications in several layers that will be made on clay supports, already fired, provided by the organisation.

Vilma Bosi In 1978 she began his work as a ceramist in Antonietta Mazzotti's workshop where he became passionate and specialised in the decoration of ceramic artefacts. During her career, she collaborated with the Diva ceramics industry where she was in charge of the hand-decorated department and laboratory. Over time, her specialisation became the third fire (mainly gold and precious) thanks to which she collaborated with various artists and craftsmen in Italy. Among the most important are: La bottega Gatti, Fos Ceramiche, Padovani Ceramiche, Laboratorio Pesaro, Coralla Maiuri and Ceramic & Colours. In 2011, she was hired by Ceramic & Colours as laboratory manager, a role she still holds today. Since 2018 she has been teaching at the Faenza Art Ceramic Center.

LOW-TEMPERATURE GLAZES, CHEMISTRY AND FORMULATIONS | Claudio Gardenghi

650.00

22-23-24-25-26 May 2024

Course focusing on making your own low-temperature ceramic glazes.

In this particular course, you will learn how to formulate or modify the aesthetics of lowtemperature glazes. Low-temperature ceramic objects often need a "cover". which is called a glaze, required to make the ceramic object water-resistant and aesthetically conform to what is desired. What is needed to make a glaze? What frits and raw materials to combine to make it? How to modify a ready-made glaze? And how to proceed from test to test to achieve the desired effect? The teacher Claudio Gardenghi, an expert with over forty years of experience in some of the most important ceramic colour factories, will introduce participants to the world of lowtemperature glazes, also giving space for some personal research. In fact, thanks to the small number of participants, it will be possible both to work on bases provided by the organisation and to analyse, replicate or correct glazes deriving from participants' own research ("as long as they are suitable for low temperature"). All results will then be presented and shared with the class.

Claudio Gardenghi Graduated in Technological Education at the Art Institute for Ceramics 'G. Ballardini' in Faenza. During his working activity, he has developed collaborations with several Ceramic Colour Factories, including Colorobbia and Cover, as well as important ceramic industries such as Cooperativa Ceramica di Imola, La Faenza and Cerdomus. Over the years, he has been able to expand his experience in countless consulting assignments in different countries around the world )Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, China, South Africa and Iran.

The 32-hour workshop lasts from 9.00 to 17.00 on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and from 9.00 to 13.00 on Sunday.

SWEET RAKU WITH LUSTRES | Giovanni Cimatti

08-09 June 2024

Sweet Raku is an idea that Giovanni Cimatti came up with in the late 1990s and which differs from so-called Raku in that it has reduced fumigation and the use of chamotte-free clays.

Giovanni Cimatti's sweet raku in some of its declinations. During the course, forms will be made that simultaneously and in a single firing will have the orange colour of 'sealed earths', the transparencies of copper and non-copper crystallines, the lustres in copper reduction in gas kiln firing and the black of Raku smoke.

Giovanni Cimatti Giovanni Cimatti was a teacher at the Art Institute in Siena, director of the 'T. MY FUNNY GLAZES | Maite Larena

780.00

12-13-14-15-16 June 2024

Course focusing on making your own ceramic glazes.

He has published 11 specialized articles on glaze coverings and developed 6 projects subsidized by the Spanish government on ceramic research. And for several years he is the head of the research, development and production of glazes and stains of PRODESCO S.L. and of AICE-ITC, Research Association of Spanish Ceramics Industries. BLACK CERAMIC, CLAY OF ETRURIA | Gabriele Tognoloni

300.00

22-23 June 2024

Bucchero is a type of fine and very light black ceramic produced by the Etruscans to make vases. The integral black monochrome is the most striking feature of this type of pottery and the colouring is achieved by a special firing process. Bucchero was used in Etruria from the mid 7th century BC to the first half of the 5th century BC.

Gabriele Tognoloni Born in Gubbio in 1973 and graduated in Sculpture from the 'Pietro Vannucci' Academy of Fine Arts. He leads Unico, in the city of Gubbio, an atelier and gallery where his artistic experience takes shape in ceramics that reveal not only their link with local artistic craft traditions and the genius loci, but also with the direct and indirect input received from some of the most important personalities of Italian and international visual research, reinterpreting these suggestions according to his own highly personal and immediately recognisable language. Many art critics have written about his work, including Italo Tomassoni, Aldo Iori and Antonio Carlo Ponti. Recent exhibitions include one-man shows at the Galleria "lalineaartecontemporanea" in Rome (2016) and at the Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea "La Rocca" in Umbertide (2020), the group show "origine/presente" at Atelier Schwab in Wertheim, Germany (2018), an artistic residency at Atelier A in Apricale (2018), the "Progetto Italia" in collaboration with the artist Alberto Gianfreda at Casa Testori in Milan (2021) and the "Grand tour Limonaia".

CREATIVE MOLDING TECHNIQUE | Simon Zsolt József

450.00

09-10-11-12 September 2022

The aim of the course is to understand the opportunities to model the forms inherent in molding errors. We will learn how to prepare a multi-part plaster molding form, which allows us to model the internal and external shapes of the final object.

The artist will make a presentation of his works, which will allow to observe and understand this special molding procedure. The second half of the screening will demonstrate the creation of a specific object from the beginning to the final stage.

Participants will start working on one of Zsolt's floral objects, through an individual consultation, and later, they will create a different shape, allowing learning from each other's work. From the preparation of the plaster, the finishing, sawing, sanding and assembly of the plaster form will follow until the porcelain casting.

It will be possible to choose between two different techniques: - FLORAL (the organisation will provide 2 plaster cylinders with a diameter of 19 cm); - VASE TYPE (the organisation will provide two plaster cylinders with a diameter of 19 cm and two with a diameter of 12 cm). The technique chosen must be communicated to the Faenza Art Ceramic Center at the time of the registration.

Simon Zsolt József Simon Zsolt József studied at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest. He is an all-round artist, interested in ceramics, painting, theater and music. The study of movement is the basis of his work. His particular research is concentrated in the process through the molds or modules that give birth to a particular shape, not the programmed one. It uses porcelain for its quality of fragility which grants a sense of lightness, movement and refinement.

The 20-hour workshop lasts from 9.00 to 17.00 on friday and saturday, from 9.00 to 16.00 on sunday and from 9.00 to 12.00 on monday.

PORCELAIN WAVES | Mette Maya

22-23-24-25 September 2022

The workshop explores the use of organic shaped structures in ceramics inspired by nature and architecture. During the workshop delicate structures will be made using bamboo curtains and string.

Afterwards several layers of soft paperclay will then be applied on the bamboo structure to create textured porcelain waves. The bamboo will burn during firing, making possible many creative possibilities through the addition, combination and modification of shapes. These bamboo structures will also be the basis for making plaster moulds to explore movement in clay.

Finally, a selection of the works produced will be glazed with engobes and oxides that will allow for very interesting colour effects in the final firing.

Mette Maya Mette Maya Gregersen holds a BA in ceramics from the Camberwell College of Arts ad a MA in Art Psychotherapy from Sheffield University. She has travelled extensively and has been invited to ceramic residencies in the UK, Hungary and China. Her work is an investigation into her own emotional condition as well as into social identity and a connection between thought, hands and space. She has exhibited internationally, hold lectures and taught many workshops. She is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics, the Danish Association of Art and Design and the Dirty Go Clay Band.

THE SHAPES OF PORCELAIN | Etra Masi

380.00
Multi-technical course on Liquid and body porcelain..

Porcelain is a material with many qualities: transparency, whiteness, hardness; to enhance them is to have understood its nature. In this course, different techniques will be addressed, the first step towards being able to move freely within the production processes of porcelain. Casting, plastic modelling, moulding and glazing are the bases from which both objects of use and sculptural masses can be created. Porcelain in liquid form and in the plastic state will be worked with or without the aid of plaster moulds into small shapes, analysing for each phase: time, criticality and potential. Each participant, at the end of the course, will have broadened and clarified his or her knowledge of the physical and technical properties of 'white gold' and will be able to choose the working method most suited to his or her imagination.

Etra Masi He graduated in Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, where he expanded on the theme of "contaminations" and investigated the relationship between sculpture and architecture. When he arrived in Faenza in 2015, he came into contact with the ceramic tradition, deepening his knowledge of craft techniques. Porcelain becomes his material of choice, he builds his sculptures by modelling them by hand, everything revolves around the enhancement of the tactile dimension, the gesture writes the sign. Her work is featured at trade fairs, exhibitions and international art competitions. MY FUNNY GLAZES | Maite Larena

14-15-16-17-18 June 2023

Course focusing on making your own ceramic glazes.

Ceramic maze: the clays

27 and 28 January 2018

Docente: Maestro Giovanni Cimatti

A sea of melted glass

3 - 4 february 2018

Docente: Maestro Giovanni Cimatti

Ceramic maze: the glazes

17 and 18 February 2018

Thousand bubbles

10 and 11 March 2018
